Vincenzo Costanzo
Senior Research Associate
Vincenzo is a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds an MSc and a PhD in Physics from the University of Toronto, a BSc in Physics from Universidad Simón Bolívar, and an MBA in Environmental Project Management from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). Before joining the ATOMS Lab, he was a Professor of Geophysics at Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela) and a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto.
His earlier work focused on rock magnetism applied to environmental and hydrocarbon exploration, with particular emphasis on near-surface characterization of petroleum reservoirs using magnetic and geochemical signatures associated with oil and gas microseepage through overlying porous strata. Since joining the ATOMS Lab, he has concentrated his investigation on 3D electrical resistivity and induced polarization imaging of landfill systems and surrounding areas, integrated with methane flux measurements, geochemical data, and numerical analysis to characterize subsurface leachate accumulation and contaminant migration.
He is currently engaged in applied research with Indigenous communities in Canada, combining geophysical surveys, groundwater flow and pollutant transport modelling, and machine-learning–based mapping of multi-decadal hydrogeochemical time series to delineate aquifer contaminant pathways and inform environmental risk assessment, monitoring strategies, and remediation planning. His research is embedded within broader community-engaged initiatives that emphasize transparent data interpretation, capacity building, and Indigenous Integrated Knowledge Translation practices.
