Oscar Alvarez Lemus
PhD Candidate
Oscar Alvarez is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on multi-length-scale thermal modelling of lithium-ion battery packs and solid-state-transformers, whose aim is to improve the thermal performance and longevity of these systems in a collaborative work with industry partners.
He completed his PhD at the University of Toronto, where he employed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental activities. As part of his doctoral research, he developed a framework to analyze hierarchical thermal transport across multiple length scales in pristine lithium-ion battery systems, studying industry-relevant case studies for electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Before his PhD program, Oscar received his M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 and his B.A.Sc. in 2017 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, with specialization in thermal systems. He was an instructor in Thermofluids courses and the chief project’s engineer in a company dedicated to the design, implementation and monitoring of central heating systems.
