Christopher Doerrer

Postdoctoral Fellow

Christopher Doerrer is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the development of multiscale hierarchical models that help optimize the thermo-electro-chemical battery design for electric vehicles. His broader research interests are in the field of energy storage and sustainability, particularly in finding long-term solutions with reduced environmental impact.

He obtained his PhD in Materials Science at the University of Oxford where he investigated novel manufacturing routes to solid-state batteries and rate-limiting factors in sulfide-based cell architectures for high energy density applications.

Before coming to Oxford, he studied lithium-ion battery electrodes made by simultaneous multilayer slot die coating at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as part of his M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. During his master’s he also conducted research on high temperature electrolysis at the German Aerospace Center and at Bosch’s central Research Campus near Stuttgart.

As for his B.Eng. thesis he investigated the processing conditions of high temperature superconducting wires at ESRF and CERN. Earlier on he had the opportunity to do an internship abroad at Bosch in Spain where he was working on the development of fuel filters.
